In honour of Postpartum Haemorrhage (PPH) Awareness Day on October 5th, Sensitive Midwifery and Ferring Pharmaceuticals invite maternal healthcare professionals to a vital conversation on safeguarding mothers during childbirth.
At Sensitive Midwifery, we believe that true PPH prevention starts long before labour. Beginning with optimal pre-conception nutrition, comprehensive antenatal care, and honouring natural, physiological birth as our primary shields against haemorrhage.
However, when complications arise, swift and evidence-based clinical action is essential. PPH remains the fourth leading cause of maternal deaths in South Africa (Saving Mothers Report 2023). A tragedy because these deaths are preventable.
Join us as we explore how a continuum of care, from pregnancy wellness to natural birth and the newly launched WHO Consolidated Guidelines (developed jointly with FIGO and ICM), creates an integrated shield of safety for every mother.

Q&A

Dr Margreet Barnardt is a South African-born Midwife Specialist of Dutch heritage who has built an impressive career in midwifery spanning multiple countries and sectors. After obtaining her bachelor's degree in Belgium and completing advanced studies, including a PhD in South Africa, she gained valuable experience in the Netherlands' midwifery-led care system before establishing the Healthy Mom and Baby Clinic, a non-profit organisation serving underprivileged women in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa. Alongside this, she ran her own practice as a private midwife, earning the moniker "The Surfing Midwife."
Dr Barnardt has become a dedicated advocate for improving South Africa's birthing culture through publishing research, presenting at international conferences, and training healthcare professionals. Her commitment to advancing the field led to her appointment as General Manager of the Sister Lilian Centre and Sensitive Midwifery in 2019, where she continues to champion maternal and infant healthcare on both national and international platforms.

Dr Bongi Rubushe-Ngwenya is an experienced obstetrician and gynaecologist with a strong background in women’s health and clinical leadership. She previously served as Head of the Endocrine Clinic at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, where she played a key role in managing complex endocrine-related reproductive conditions.
Dr Rubushe-Ngwenya is actively involved in academic teaching at the University of the Witwatersrand, contributing to the training and mentorship of future specialists.
